A belated Happy Solstice to all!

I heard this song on NHPR's Folk Show the other day and thought I would share. Before the song, John McCutcheon talked about how he was touring in Europe (it must have been the late eighties at the time). He said that for quite a few shows, there would be a small group of old German men who would attend the concert, then leave immediately after the show. One night, he caught up with them and asked what was going on. They said that they were here for this song. Because they were there and people thought they were crazy when they told the story of what happened that night. But his song proved that it really did occur.

Christmas in the Trenches

More on the story and lyrics.

On less happy ground, my grandfather is not doing well. He may not make it to Christmas, though after losing his wife almost two years ago, he has told us that he is ready to go and not to grieve for him. He's also 99 years old. Please send any good thoughts or prayers his way today.

Hey all,

Thanks for the advice. The girls are now happily playing dreidel for skittles. It really can take a long time to play. They did have a few menorahs at Target, but my youngest daughter really wanted the wooden menorah "puzzle", with wooden candles. I hope that's not cheating too much. We also bought a "Happy Hanukkah" window cling.

I also have learned that five potatoes makes a *ton* of latkes. We should have enough for eight nights, if the family doesn't get sick of them. I don't know if they came out the way they are supposed to, but I thought they were yummy (especially with apple sauce and Greek yogurt). I'm hoping to also make matzo ball soup sometime this week (or a vegetarian version).

I appreciate all the links you folks gave me.

My daughter has asked if we could celebrate Hanukkah. I would like to give her the opportunity of learning about other cultures, even though I know her main motivation is to play the dreidel game and get candy. Soooo, does anyone know what store I could visit to get a dreidel and a menorah? And are there any web sites to help someone who knows little about Jewish traditions celebrate Hanukkah? Like, "Hanukkah for dummies"?

Thanks!

Tell Reid: No vacation for the Senate before health care reform passes.

From Credo:

Seriously? The Senate is going on vacation without passing health care reform?

President Obama has made it very clear that passing meaningful health care reform is his top priority this summer — but on July 23, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the full Senate wouldn't vote on a bill until the fall.

We already have a good health care bill in the Senate from Sen. Kennedy's HELP Committee — a bill that includes a public option. The problem is that we need the Finance Committee to pass a bill to fund the HELP Committee's bill, and Finance Chair Max Baucus is dragging his feet — with the ultimate goal of killing the public option.

I just signed a petition to tell Sen. Reid not to let the Senate go on vacation until they pass a bill that includes a public option. I hope you will, too. Please have a look and take action.

http://act.credoaction.com/r/?r=4457&id=5190-1983675-4O2mR0x&t=6
